The Isle of Wight is famous for its yachting and sailing in the renowned waters of the Solent which remain the focus of the annual Cowes Week regatta as well as having involvement with events such as The Fastnet and Admirals Cup. World leaders in the sport such as Ellen MacArthur and Shirley Robertson have chosen to base themselves in Cowes. There are numerous yacht clubs, sailing clubs as well as centres for learning water sports. The beaches and coastline also offer a wide variety of other water based activities varying from kite surfing to wind surfing, water skiing and surfing.

The interior of the Island benefits from some wonderful unspoilt countryside which provides a paradise for walkers, horse riders and mountain biking. There are numerous golf courses and other facilities such as ice skating.

The Island benefits from a number of historic properties which are open to the public including Osborne House, Appuldurcombe and Carisbrooke Castle. There are also a wide variety of other attractions including a steam railway and numerous museums.

In recent years the Island has continued to develop its diverse leisure opportunities resulting in events such as The Isle of Wight Music Festival, White Air (an extreme watersports event held at the end of October), holding the world Championship for motorcross to walking and cycling events.
